Canon Andrew White
Missionary

Reverend Canon Andrew White HonPhD, often called the “Vicar of Baghdad”, is one of the most renowned missionaries in the world. Canon White’s work has been documented by many of the UK’s leading mainstream media outlets, including the Financial TimesThe TelegraphThe IndependentThe Daily Mail, and The Spectator, as well as US media giants like New York TimesWall Street JournalPBSFox NewsWashington PostChristian Post, and Huffington Post. He also appears regularly in Christian media outlets like Christianity Today and Daystar.

Canon White served as the Chaplain of St George’s Anglican Church Baghdad, the only Anglican church in Iraq, from 1998 to 2014. In 2014, he was ordered to leave Iraq by the Archbishop of Canterbury for the sake of Security. Since then, Canon White has transitioned to leading his displaced congregation in Jordan, Israel, and Palestine.
Much of Canon White’s life’s work has been in the area of reconciliation, and he has spent the last several decades living in and working through the cultural, religious, military, and political tensions in some of the most volatile places on the planet. Aside from leading a congregation in Baghdad, Canon White has been actively involved in one of the most iconic challenges in the Middle East: maintaining communication between Shia and Sunni leaders, hoping that by gaining the trust of religious leaders on all sides of modern Middle Eastern conflicts, he could meditate and establish dialogue among warring parties.

The nature of evangelism and church leadership in an active military zone has required extreme courage from Canon White and his church family. Among other things, he has helped resolve the hostage situation at the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem and helped negotiate the end of the Bethlehem siege in 2002; negotiated the release of his lay pastor who was kidnapped in 2007; and helped Middle Eastern believers navigate the regimes of dictators like Saddam Hussein and terrorist groups like ISIS. In Iraq, he conducted peace talks between opposing sectarian factions that led to the first joint Sunni/Shia fatwa against violence and lead peace talks sponsored by the Pentagon. His efforts to bring peace and reconciliation, while standing against violence and religious oppression, continue today.

Canon White is the recipient of numerous awards and international recognitions for his dedication to the pursuit of peace.
