Rolland Baker
Director, Iris Global

Rolland Baker is a third generation missionary who has devoted his life to serving the poor and proclaiming the name of Jesus for over thirty years. Rolland and Heidi Baker lead Iris Ministries, a missions organization that exists to participate in bringing the Kingdom of God to earth in all its aspects, but most especially through their calling to serve the very poor in Mozambique. Rolland’s passion is to share a message of love and childlike faith.

Rolland Baker was born in China as a third generation missionary.  He began Iris Ministries in 1980 with his wife Heidi, and traveled to sit with the poor in the slums of central Jakarta, Hong Kong, and London. After ministering for twelve years in Asia and three years in the UK, Rolland Heidi arrived in Mozambique in 1995. Believing that the most likely place to see a revival was among the most unlikely, they were drawn to Mozambique, which was officially listed at the time as the poorest country of the world. As they began to pour out their hearts to the street children there, amazing miracles began to take place. Iris now sees thousands find Jesus every month. The deaf hear, the blind see, and the poor hear the good news. Rolland himself experienced the Lord’s supernatural healing in 2008 when he was diagnosed with severe dementia, unable to recognize his wife and children. The physicians found that there were minor damage to his brain cells, which were caused by two serious bouts of malaria and possibly a series of small strokes. Although the doctors predicted that he would die, God miraculously healed him and he is now fully functioning and restored.

Iris’ mission is to express a living and tangible response to those commandments that Jesus called greatest: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength” and “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Iris oversees some 10,000 churches, fifteen outreach bases, five bible colleges, medical clinics, church-based orphan care, children's villages, primary schools, cottage industries, widow's programs, well drilling projects, missionary training schools village feeding programs, housing for the disabled and other development initiatives. Iris churches can be seen in nations all around the world, including Brazil, India, Indonesia, Israel, Kenya, Madagascar, Malawi, Nepal, Sierra Leone, South Africa, South Korea, Sudan and Tanzania.

Rolland grew up as an "extreme science nerd" and took aim at the higher echelons of academia. He turned down acceptances from Harvard and MIT for a full scholarship at Caltech, but the Holy Spirit supernaturally encountered him and took Rolland on a path towards full-time ministry. He left Caltech to enroll at Vanguard University, where he later earned his M.A.. Rolland also holds a D.Min. from United Theology Seminary. He strongly values a broad-based education and loves the combination of simple faith in Jesus with learning of every kind to better serve the Kingdom. Rolland was greatly influenced by his grandfather, H.A. Baker, who wrote “Visions Beyond the Veil,” an account of the extended visions of heaven and hell that children received in his remote orphanage in southwest China two generations ago. His life's work with Heidi is to call faith and love into action.
